I stopped watching the "Academy Awards Trade show" a couple of decades back. I read about them in the paper next morning.

BUT I watched "Noah" as you suggested and I liked it very much. It shows just how Biblical myths can be freed from the shackles of Biblical literalism and make a moving and entertaining film. So many themes resonated throughout. A retelling for our time without being preachy.

Thanks so much for the assignment!

RE: TG:M, at the very least it needs a lot of nominations and at least a few awards (editing and cinematography specifically come to mind). But given the nature of the Academy, they will find a way to f*ck this up I guarantee it.

Also, loved Noah. Not the greatest "Biblical" film ever made, but it's still pretty good and is probably about as close to a "secular" telling of the story as you'll ever find.

I never saw Top Gun and I haven’t seen the sequel, but I agree with you completely. People loved this movie and they deserve to have their choices validated at least sometimes.

Agreed on the pragmatic reasons why Top Gun: Maverick should win. Also, as I mentioned on Twitter, if it doesn't win Best Editing then the Oscars should be forever cancelled. The clarity of any scene in the cockpits and the exteriors with the planes is the fruit of tremendous pre-production planning and post-production expertise.

Loved Top Gun Maverick! I grew up over the hill from Miramar, and as children in the 50s we were thrilled by the jets flying over the house. Then they were banned "from the beach" because of the noise. . . Great movie.
